La Cueva de los Abuelos

This quirky cave house is located in rural Murcia province Spain. It is classed as the commune of La Zarza,  although in reality is on its own with the exception of a row of other neighboring cave houses that originally belonged and some still belong to the original family. Some are permanent residences and some are holiday homes (weekend) only.

The cave has, within its main building, two bedrooms, that would sleep five across three beds if needed (two doubles and a single). There is also a sitting room, dining room inside and a kitchen inside (although mind your head!)

The cave construction ensures that the interior remains comparatively cool in the hot summer months. In the cooler months, there is a large open fireplace in the sitting room that can be used. There is no other heating in the property. 

It is important to note that the toilet and shower facilities are located in a small building directly opposite the front of the property. The shower is a pump shower and so in some respects mirrors camping/ asian style bathing albeits you are sleeping in a constructed building.

The surrounding area is rugged and scenically stunning, with uninterrupted sunrise and sunset views from the roof of the cave where you can sit and relax. There is an outdoor barbecue area overlooking the Almond Grove and indoor gas stove for cooking. All cooking utensils , pots and pans and crockery are provided. You just need to take your own towels. There is a fridge and a washing machine in the kitchen. 

The property importantly has no Wi-Fi and no television although an array of games and books are provided and growing in their numbers.

To access the property, car hire/ transport is essential, unless arriving by bike.  The property is located within an easy hour’s drive of both Alicante and Murcia airports, the coastline of the Costa Blanca within an hour and the closest major town of Pinoso in 20 minutes. It is a fantastic, unusual and highly cost effective base to explore the region both on the interior and the coastline. Please note that there are no amenities, such as a shop or restaurant in the village of La Zarza. The closest amenities are dispersed in the surrounding rural area (rural restaurants) or the town of Pinoso. 

The low price point accounts for the fact that the experience differs to that that you may experience in other holiday homes (although probably not drastically from many Air BnBs). That means that there is an expectation you’ll keep the place clean and tidy and at the end of the stay ensure that everything is clean and put away, that the sheets are stripped, put through a wash cycle and dried. If time doesn’t permit, then please get in contact and I’ll explain what to do. You will find cleaning products under the kitchen sink, and cleaning equipment and a washing machine downstairs.
